Foreign ministers of Belarus, Gambia meet in Minsk

Belarusian Foreign Minister Syarhey Martynaw on Thursday met with his Gambian counterpart, Mamadou Tangara, who had arrived in Minsk on the previous day, BelaPAN reports.

The ministers agreed to begin work on several key bilateral agreements that would form a legal basis for cooperation between the two countries, said the press office of the Belarusian foreign ministry.

According to the press office, Mr. Martynaw said following the meeting that Belarus and The Gambia could cooperate in the development of the West-African country’s industrial and agricultural sectors and its education and technical potential, as well as in the exploration of the country’s natural resources.

“Since the Republic of Belarus has modest natural resources, we are actually interested in everything that our industry needs,” Mr. Martynaw said. “Today we talked in detail about the opportunities that are opened up by the last prospecting results in The Gambia in the sphere of oil production.”

‘For our part, we stressed that this cooperation should be mutually beneficial,” Mr. Martynaw said. “In the framework of such cooperation, Belarus is ready to address not only trade, export and import, but also projects that would entail the establishment of assembling enterprises, technology transfers, the training of manpower and engineering personnel, and so on.”

“Belarus and The Gambia are at the very beginning of the development of our relations,” Mr. Martynaw concluded. “We hope that our cooperation will be efficient and productive.”
