New general education school in Minsk preparing for beginning of academic year

Four new general education schools will open their doors in Belarus on September 1, the beginning of the 2010/2011 academic year, with two in Minsk. A BelaPAN correspondent visited one of them.

Opening a new school is difficult but very interesting, headmaster Aleh Zhuk told BelaPAN.

“Our school has a capacity to accept 1,020 students,” he said. “We plan to focus training on legal studies starting next year. And we will first pay an increased attention to local history studies as part of the project. We hope that we will be able to open our own local history museum within 12 or 18 months."

The new school on Lew Sapieha Street encompasses three language laboratories, three computer studies rooms, a weight room and two gyms, with one 18 meters wide and 36 meters long.

Work is nearing completion to prepare the institution for its first academic year; only some furniture and equipment yet need to be installed, Mr. Zhuk said.
