White-red-white flags displayed in downtown Brest

Around 30 Belarus’ historically national white-red-white flags appeared on central Masheraw Avenue in Brest on the evening of July 27 when opposition activists across the country celebrated the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, BelaPAN reports.

The Brest authorities fixed state red and green flags to lamp posts along the avenue ahead of July 28, the city’s founding anniversary.

The flags were replaced at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday when a heavy rain hit the city and its streets became empty.

Police, however, reacted promptly and removed the “improper” national symbols.

On November 16, 2009, many white-red-white flags appeared on the avenue as well, fixed by unknown opposition activists. They were removed only in an hour.
