Uladzimir Nyaklyayew set to attend All-Belarusian People’s Assembly

Ninety-eight percent of people engaged in private enterprise would like to take part in drafting laws that will concern them, but a major problem of the Belarusian public is that it in no way participates in decision-making, poet Uladzimir Nyaklyayew, leader of the “Tell the Truth!” campaign, said in an interview with BelaPAN during small business owners’ conference in Minsk on Monday.

A new “All-Belarusian People’s Assembly” will soon be held, at which important decision are to be made, Mr. Nyaklyayew said, noting that business owners had never been among the participants of such conferences.

“That’s why we, the activists of the ‘Tell the Truth!’ campaign, have decided to nominate our delegate to this All-Belarusian People’s Assembly so that our delegate will tell the people’s truth to the government delegates,” Mr. Nyaklyayew said.

It would be enough to collect 20,000 signatures to nominate such a delegate, according to him.

“If the campaign activists empower me to represent the people at the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, I’ll become a delegate,” he said.

The Fourth All-Belarusian People's Assembly is expected to be the culmination of Alyaksandr Lukashenka's campaign in the run-up to a presidential election to be held in Belarus in early 2011.

The Third All-Belarusian People's Assembly was held two weeks before a presidential election in 2006. As many as 2,500 delegates attended that conference, with the six regions represented by 350 delegates each and the city of Minsk by 400 delegates.
