Young opposition activist suspected of splashing paint on Lenin statue in Navahrudak to stand trial on Tuesday
Yury Kazak, a member of an unregistered opposition party called Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD), is expected to stand trial in the city court in Navahrudak on Tuesday, December 29, on a charge of hooliganism in connection with the splashing of green paint on a monument to Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin in the city on the night between November 6 and 7.
The offense carries a penalty of a fine or imprisonment for up to three years under Part One of the Criminal Code’s Article 339.
Mr. Kazak and another BCD member, Darya Bakhur, were arrested by police not far from the scene following the vandal attack. A can of green paint and gloves were found on them.
The attack was timed to coincide with the 92nd anniversary of the October Revolution that is still observed in Belarus as a state holiday.
No charge was brought against Ms. Bakhur. //BelaPAN
